3 Cowboys Who Can Clinch a Roster Spot in Final Preseason Game
These Cowboys need strong showings in Saturday's preseason finale against the Raiders if they hope to crack the 53-man roster.
When training camp began, Will Grier seemed destined to hit the cut line. After all, starting quarterback Dak Prescott is back for his eighth season while Cooper Rush is one of the best backup gunslingers in the NFL.
Despite the uphill battle ahead of him, Grier never gave up. That shouldn't come as a surprise, though, since the 28-year-old proved how resilient he is by making the NFL despite going undrafted out of West Virginia in 2019.
Fast forward to the preseason, where Grier has been the Cowboys' main signal-caller. He's attempted 49 passes over the first two exhibition games, completing 35 of those throws (71.4%) for 335 yards and a pair of TDs with 2 interceptions.
While some fans assumed that the giveaways would be the end of Grier, head coach Mike McCarthy is willing to look past them. McCarthy told reporters following the preseason loss to the Seahawks that the veteran gunslinger "was in total command of the offense."
If Grier wants to be the No. 3 QB, he has to reward McCarthy's faith in him with another strong showing. Fortunately, he has a great chance to do so this weekend against a Las Vegas defense that was among the worst in the NFL against the pass in 2022.
